Writing

The time to begin writing an article is when you have finished it to your satisfaction. By that time you begin to clearly and logically perceive what it is you really want to say.
— Mark Twain —

The ability to write effectively and persuasively is a 'must have' skill today. Good writing skills are essential for effective communication. Learning to write well takes time and practice. It also requires knowledge of grammar, usage, style and a lot of other things.

There are different kinds or genres of writing-academic, fiction, scholarly, simple, and so on. Each genre requires different skill sets and different approaches. A professional reference book could not be written in the same style as a text book written for 10th grade students. Similarly, a doctoral thesis cannot be written like a novel.

In order to convey your ideas effectively and clearly, your writing style should be suitable for the task at hand. It should be right for the target you are addressing. It should be simple, clear and concise. It should appraise, notify, surprise, stimulate, inspire, inform, reduce uncertainty, impart knowledge and wisdom, entertain, influence, persuade and change the reader. Your writing style should be easy-to-read and engaging.

You can improve your writing skills and become better writers and communicators by learning the right techniques and using right tools. But that is only one aspect; the more important ingredient for success is hard work and practice. You should practice your craft and continue practicing it-it is a continuous learning process. You should also read a lot to become better writers. Getting exposed to the writing style, organization and presentation techniques, use of words, sentence construction, etc., of the masters and learning their craft can help you in improving your writing.

The role of a writer is not to say what we all can say, but what we are unable to say.
